Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), an artist of fame and influence in Western Art, painted with a frantic technique and pace. He painted nature and people around him and often sowers. He considered sowing an honorable endeavor and completed 30 drawings and paintings on this theme.
In this image he shares a mixture of reality and imagination in a wondrous color palette. The bright yellow of the sun, the green-yellow sky, the purples and pinks of the field, the periwinkle expanses, the
rugged brown-black tree, the orange clouds and leaves, and the dark, faceless figure all call us to join him in a world beyond our vision.
May we join him also in his focus on sowing seeds and the possible questions this poses in our new year. What seeds of value, faith and love do we want to scatter in the world now? Where? When? How? For whom?
May we pray to remember who we are and what we hold dear in these times. May we pray in all things to surrender our words and actions to God’s guidance and spirit. Amen.
