Vincent van Gogh painted Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun during his year in the asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provence. He completed nearly 150 paintings in that year as he tried to renew his spirit in attention to God’s creation. This is a van Gogh signature piece with his use of yellow and thick impasto. His extensive palette of tints and shades from sea foam to burnt umber creates an extraordinary interpretation of a simple view.
This scene joins our current hot summer days when one can nearly imagine the thick, pulsing rays of the sun’s light and heat being this visible in the sky. It also seems a prophetic statement on nature and a changing climate. In deepest faith, may we be loving stewards of what is as it may one day be only what was.
