Art Reflection - Tissot

James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and illustrator. His work was of the Realism and Impressionism Schools for much of his career. He worked as a fashion illustrator and painted French culture until he had a conversion experience and returned to his Catholic faith in 1885. He spent the rest of his life painting scenes from the Bible with imagination and realism.

This stunning piece is done with opaque watercolor. It is based on Matthew 14:23-24a, a scene that follows the feeding of the five thousand:

The sky, the ground, the illuminated image of Jesus nearly transparent in a cross-like stance all seem beyond words to respond. Perhaps only a prayer can be said to this scene so rich with Lenten reverence. . . maybe a prayer for daily, imagined mountain tops and time this close to God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In gratitude, faith and hope,
