Alma Thomas (1891-1978) was a major artist of the 20th century. She worked in the Washington, D.C. area in the Expressionism and Color Field art movements. She believed the creative spirit was independent of race or gender and pushed her careers as a black artist and teacher forward in this independence.
Red Sunset, Old Pond Concerto is a stunning work in acrylics of red-orange, deep lapis blue and a tint of blue-green all applied in the various rhythms of a complex musical piece. You can almost see her brush moving to an inspired cadence in colors that filled her view, all familiar from sunsets we have each seen. This is a powerful, captivating piece upon which your eyes may rest and linger.
We thank Alma Thomas for showing us her sunset. May we carry it with us in all the evenings to come and place our trust in the independence she claimed beyond race or gender. We are all God’s children loved and gifted. Thanks be to God at every sunset and every dawn.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
