Erno Schubert (1903-1960) was a Hungarian painter of still lifes. His abstract compositions and his use of color are notable aspects of his work. His palettes hold much variety and a light-infused quality. He makes an ordinary scene look anything but ordinary.
Still Life with Philodendron appears to have been painted much later than 1960. It brings to mind the crazy wobbles and rearrangements of our current days as our society tries to find the way to a new normal. It seems variables pile upon our routines much as the collection of items stacked on this surface. The greens and blues included could represent the patience and goodwill that we must also collect and share often as nothing goes quite as smoothly as we remember. This painting is a deep breath rededicating ourselves to God and to each other. The light portrayed is the cause and effect of love which is now needed in such great measure.
