This delicate, color lithograph is the work of French artist, Henri Riviere. He lived from 1864-1951 as a painter and printmaker. He focused on the scenes of life and nature around him and created as a post-impressionist.
This composition is filled with interest. His perspective of two lines of trees sets the structure of the piece. One row is configured so the first tree blocks most of our view of those subsequent. The other row is a study in repetition, detail and one-point reference. The partial reflections of the second hold the work in place for the muted details of people, pets and boats; of table and cityscape.
Riviere’s use of pastel and muted colors contributes to the imaged movement and appeal of this place under a yellow sky. His surreal color choices can cause us to pause and imagine. From the lithographic process of exact analysis and alignment, Henri Riviere found a deep and lovely way into the heart of this view.
May our continued prayer be to see with the eyes of the artist. God filled the world with beauty and invitation. May we notice. Amen.
