Art Reflection - Qi

He Qi, Ph.D., is a professor at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary and a tutor at Nanjing University. He has also held an artist residency at Fuller Theological Seminary in California

and received many international awards and recognitions. His paintings were once featured each month in the Presbyterian Planning Calendar.

He Qi began painting with water and ink in the scholarly tradition of China. After travelling extensively, he began to blend this traditional style with many Western modern styles including Impressionism and Cubism.

In Resurrection, Two Women, we see his more recent work.  In a riot of color and Picasso-inspired faces, He Qi seems to break the limits of time and space with an ancient story shown in folk and modern art elements. Here in simple, quiet shapes and loud, startling colors, we see the Easter morning scene of women carrying jars of spices to anoint the body of Jesus and an angel sharing that he is not there.

As we open our eyes and hearts to this fresh illustration of the words we will soon again share, may we rejoice in the diversity of believers in every time and place and in the work of He Qi who reminds us of this diversity with his unique and familiar scenes. Amen.
