It can be difficult to know what a painting will mean 146 years after it is completed. As we look at this work by French Impressionist, Claude Monet, done for the Rue Saint Denis Festivities of 1878, we see a frenzy of flags unfurled in layers above a crowd of marks as people and under a heavenly tinted blue sky. What does the quick brush work of this master mean? We each get to decide and to craft our prayers for our times from that meaning.
In this work of vision and creativity, we each have an opportunity to see what is of the world and remember what is not. May we rest in the sovereignty of God in all things, times and places. Amen.
