Art Reflection - Milpurrurru

Gurrupdu is a large bark painting done by esteemed Australian Aboriginal artist, George Milpurrurru (1934-1998). George Milpurrurru lived in the Central Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. He came from a large family of artists and learned to use the dots, dashes and interesting palettes of this art tradition from his family. This crowded composition invites us into the relationship of the Aboriginal people and nature. The artist’s appreciation for these ducks seems to be known by them as they stand confidently across the work.

Everything we know about the history of the Aboriginal people calls us to their cooperation with and respect for a rugged, hostile environment. Their music and visual arts speak to reverence and humility as nature is preserved and celebrated in their careful choices. With this painting celebrating ducks, may we let George Milpurrurru enter our consciousness and strengthen our connection with God’s creation. May we live our gratitude each day.

In gratitude, faith and hope,
