Art Reflection - Hawkins

William Hawkins was a self-taught, African American artist from Kentucky.  He moved to Columbus, Ohio, at age 21. He painted cityscapes and fantastic animals in Columbus using photographs and illustrations as a starting point. He used scavenged materials, often painting on wood he found on construction sites. He sometimes framed his art by nailing pieces of discarded molding directly onto the painting.

William Hawkins used a variety of media; a bright, clear palette; and bold, folk art borders. These are the bones of his charming style and creations. His paintings were noticed in the 1980’s and are still displayed and honored in many galleries and museums. One of the most endearing things about this artist is that he included his birthplace and date with his name on nearly every painting. His energy and positive spirit filled his life and painting until his death at age 95.

William Hawkins used what he had to give us fresh eyes and a legacy we can embrace in gratitude. The simple art of this one man has lifted the spirits of many viewers. May we smile as we take in his Willard Hotel #2 and give thanks for this child of God “born in KY. July 271895.”

In gratitude, faith and hope,
