Scottish artist, Peter Doig, was born in 1959. He is world-renowned as a figurative artist, one who retains a strong reference to the real world in his modern abstraction. This artist paints magic realism as clearly seen in Reflection. Here we see this blend in a realistic person referenced in a fanciful winter scene abstracted with color. Peter Doig is quoted as saying that pictures might be films and the viewer could become the director of the film. Maybe so.
In this Advent season of waiting and preparing, reflecting on soul, heart, value, priority. . . in a colorful film we direct, there might be a new and remarkably faithful portal for our days. Realistically, what do we hold most dear for ourselves, for others, for the world? And fancifully, what colors are these things and how does each move in the world? How do we find and share them? How do we walk and dance with them?
Ultimately, the question of our reflection might be, “Where do we place ourselves in the promise of God’s gift and grace?”
Amen.
