This is an example of the glass work of Dale Chihuly who was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1941. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design and found his life in glass. His pieces are abundant and recognizable. Chihuly hasn’t actually blown glass since accidents in the late 1970’s. His designs are executed by assistants and fill spaces around the world.
A fascination with the work of this artist is his move to scale. Somehow, he was inspired to bring individual pieces of blown glass – each a marvel of this medium in its own right – together in huge and complicated groupings to fill hallways, walking bridges, stairwells and ceilings. Each arrangement is an array of diversity and unity with pieces joined to be more than the sum of these parts. Isn’t this our hope for humankind also?
Now with so many challenges at scale, may we also scale our responses. May we increase the size and creativity of our compassion, cooperation, and compromise. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
