Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a sculptor and architect of the Italian Baroque period. He was closely associated with the church of his time. He designed the colonnade enclosing the piazza at Saint Peter’s Basilica and was also thought to be the leading sculptor of his age. Here in marble he shows us Saint Bibiana. This statue is installed on the high altar of the church that shares her name in Rome. It depicts the moments just before Bibiana was martyred. Here she looks up and beyond that earthly hour.
The genius of this artist is hard to comprehend. Marble in his hands becomes fabric folded and flowing, hands raised and surrendered, hair so natural, a face both stoic and poignant, delicate nature at her feet, perfect toes, a draped pillory column. How? A gift of talent from God? Guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit? Yes. How else could a piece of stone become a saint nearly 400 years ago?
The art of the world and the ages is steeped in the presence of God as love and beauty. May we take our time in wonder and gratitude as we look upon this grace.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
