Art Reflection - Sanchez

Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) was born in Cuba. As a proud and accomplished immigrant, he is known for his color lithographs like La Casita al Sol. He created as part of the American Modernism Movement and was celebrated for his blend of realism and creativity. His works were featured on a series of USPS stamps and are part of many collections.

In this work he shares a close-up perspective of a house drenched in saturated color and sunlight in nearly perfect symmetry. The open side panels on the left seem to pose a symmetry question. Also notable is his treatment of light and shadow which takes us to bright sunshine and its place on our vision.

There is so much to notice in this seemingly straight forward work. The colors of the background in tints and shades of blue and green interrupted by true yellow in the rectangle through the house are notable. This through view also seems notable in rich implications of shade and refuge. His work seems sturdy and structured while also holding ethereal impressions and faithful questions. Maybe he intended the context of life?

We value the work of this man and the engagement he created. He calls us again and again to imagine what might be in the deep context of what is. He is an artist for times such as these.

We give thanks to the living God for Emilio Sanchez, an honored Cuban American.

In gratitude, faith and hope,
