Always an enthusiastic viewer of mixed media art and the level of creativity it requires, I introduce you to Lourdes Bernard and her plein-air landscape, In the Woods. Lourdes Bernard is a Dominican-American artist from Brooklyn. After a 23-year career in architecture, she is now devoting her time to visual art. She is associated with The New York Studio School and has held many Artist in Residence appointments including a 2023-2024 residency at Princeton Seminary.
This artist believes in artists as witnesses and uses mark making to build up form. Her drawings are the foundation upon which she creates a complex and layered visual story. In the Woods is layered with watercolor, turmeric, glue and partially done with pine needle brushes. I love her play of blue and orange as compliments in true and tinted hues here. And who knew turmeric could be a lovely ground for growth in green?
This artist is quoted as saying, “The artist provides an accurate record of the experience of what one doesn’t know,” and one of her works is entitled All My Life I was a Bride Married to Amazement. She often creates visual stories around remembrance and political activism.
May we join Lourdes Bernard in honoring the mysteries of beauty and faith. May we image the world in deep moments of trust, reclaimed goodness and opportunity. May we pray each day to be married to amazement in God’s Holy name and love. Amen.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
