EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

July 23 | 10:00am

GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

Prelude
Largo e spiccato
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Allemande
Johann Sebastian Bach

Welcome

*Call to Worship
Leader: Let us open our hearts to God’s love.
People: Let us open our souls to the gentle wind
              of God’s Spirit.
Leader: We have gathered to hear the good news
            of Jesus Christ,
People: A Word that renews us again and again.
All:        Glory be to God, Creator, Christ, and
Holy Spirit, who loves, saves, and renews us.
              Amen.

*Opening Hymn
611  Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee  (Hymn to Joy)

*Corporate Confession (Unison)
O Christ, if we carry the name Christian,
we are signs of your presence.
Yet we confess that we sometimes hurt people
through our pride, rather than showing the way
to the healing waters of your Spirit.
When we are discouraged ourselves,
we are unable to be signs of joy or hope
              or good news.
Forgive us, and give us grace to be
earthly reminders of your love. Amen.

*Assurance of God’s Love

*Response  Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove

*Passing of the Peace

LISTENING FOR GOD’S WORD

Word to the Children . . . . . . Sandy Prouty
When the music begins, children are invited to gather on the chancel steps as we sing “This is where children belong, part of our family, part of our song. Be with us, pray with us, help us grow strong: this is where children belong.” Please note that this service is livestreamed and your child’s image may appear on the video.

Prayer for Illumination (Unison)
Soften our hearts and open our minds,
as we turn again to Your Holy Word. Amen.

First Lesson
Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24 (Pew Bible Page 540)

Response to Reading
Leader: Listen to the voice of the Spirit speaking to the Church.
People: Thanks be to God.

Anthem
Tantum Ergo
César Franck (1822-1890)

Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail,

Lo! o’er ancient forms departing
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.

To the everlasting Father,
And the Son Who reigns on high
With the Holy Spirit proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty. Amen.

Second Lesson
Genesis 28:10-19a (Pew Bible Page 23)

Sermon
God Was in This Place and I Did Not Know It!
Sophie Beal, M.Div.

Moment for Reflection

Musical Reflection
O Rest in the Lord
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
