Andrew Wyeth (1917 – 2000) is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. He painted the people and land of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the Maine coast. His realism in watercolor gives us detailed snapshots of scenes that are both simple and haunting. In Race Bridge, with a muted, neutral palette, Wyeth seems to pose both practical and existential questions so fitting for our Lenten season. His take on a path to the horizon motif with tracks driving both left and right might bring to mind Psalm 121:8:
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.
This truth can hold us as we answer questions about where we are going and why. In the awareness of these forty days and nights, we are again reminded that we need not decide or walk alone. Thanks be to the living God, the three in one. Amen.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
Race Bridge, 1984 | Andrew Wyeth
