This piece by Spanish painter, Salvador Dali was completed in 1955. Dali lived from 1904-1989. He often shocked the conscience with his surrealism. He pushed the limits of most accepted norms and painted dream-like scenes of persistence and the future. This painting is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Here we see a Jesus figure surrounded by the disciples in an unknown location, maybe on a distant planet, maybe in a starship, still celebrating the Communion Sacrament. The bread, the wine, the monolithic table, the hazy landscape can offer a strengthened clarity to our perceptions and assumptions. Maybe that is the only goal of this piece. Our faith is in place for whatever comes next and even to the end of the age.
As the state of the world may affect our perceptions of most things now and as our faithful assumptions may be challenged in this Lenten time, may we see more clearly in this frame and in our lived moments the bread and the wine shared in remembrance of the one God sent to show us the way. May thoughts of the life and lessons of Jesus, the son, fill our prayers and anchor us now.
