This painting of the birth we now await was created by Julius Garibaldi Melchers (1860-1932), who is considered an American Master. He was the son of German immigrants who settled in Detroit. His father was a wood sculptor best known for making church furniture and cigar store statutes. Melchers left Michigan at age 17, returning to Germany for art training. His work spans many countries and art movements. The allure and clarity of his art were lauded in his lifetime and continue to be.
In this season of Advent may we find and rejoice in the subdued awe of this scene shown to us in detail and in wonder-filled aspects of arrangement and color. Here is the timeless mystery of Jesus with us and Jesus coming soon. As we are pulled into this scene, may the folded hands of Joseph, the exhausted face of Mary and the perfect newborn sleeping in light, help us know the heartbreaking power of the story of Jesus and of the master’s brush telling it. The subdued awe of God’s infinite gifts is shared here in double measure. And we say together, “Thanks be to God.”
In gratitude, faith and hope,
