Art Reflection - Ancher

Anna Ancher (1859-1935) was born in Skagen in north Denmark. Her artistic talent was noticed early in her life. She became part of the Skagen Art Colony painting in the Impressionism and Realism styles. Anna is known for capturing the transience of light in interior spaces and also did several stunning outdoor works. In this painting of her daughter, Helga, Anna seems to have created a masterful reminder of looking closely at the views of every moment – front, side, and back. This work is in the Michael and Anna Ancher home which is now a museum in Skagen.

This delicate view of the back of her daughter filled with light on yellow, with white lace against dark green, with red-orange in a dark box and red-orange flowers against a wall in a tint of the same red, calls us to a 360 degree appreciation of the beauty we live within. This painting is a unique invitation to let the love of God’s beauty into our wide-awake awareness of the ordinary. It challenges us to look for beauty even when backs are turned and the daily routine muffles our expectation. In the days ahead may we be surprised and renewed as we notice. May we give God thanks for this world of beauty and grace and for the artists who noticed first.
