Big Black, a large, wooden, painted sculpture by Louise Nevelson, is posed here at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It is a collage of found objects displayed in an array of 40 boxes and all painted black. This artist was born in 1899 in the Ukraine. She immigrated to the United States and became a leader in the movement of feminist art with her indoor and outdoor sculptures.
In our current times, this work seems to represent the intricate maze of considerations we face. Think of the complexity of the pandemic, the racial reckoning, and the economy, the national and international political scenes. This work could represent that maze and I hope it is a helpful and heartening view. We have been through many puzzles and there are more to come. If we put all these together, we could imagine a Nevelson sculpture like Big Black but hopefully painted in a tint of yellow or blue. We can find our way through all things with God and with each other. Thanks be to God for the questions posed and the answers given in grace and love.
In faith and hope,
