Finding Hope in a Racial Equity Idea from Black Coloradans

The Session of Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church voted unanimously on March 16 that our church become a supporting sponsor of the formal feasibility study of a unique initiative. Called the Free Lifetime Education initiative, it was developed by four activist women of Park Hill & Denver: Ms. Sade Cooper, Dr. Aisha Rousseau, Dr. Katherine Casey and Ms. Tanaka Shipp. Ms. Cooper and Drs. Rousseau and Casey presented the initiative to our supper club at the end of February. (One of our members knew some of the presenters by volunteering for other non-profit work in the community.)

The Session’s support allows Montview to become a leader in allying with meaningful action on racial justice. The Free Lifetime Education (FLE) initiative allows us to contribute time and resources to a courageous reparations effort. By offering free lifetime education – from pre-school to higher education and retraining – to all Black Coloradans, FLE takes concrete action toward erasing disparities in income, economic opportunity and wealth between black and white families.

By becoming a supporting sponsor of the initiative’s feasibility study, Montview will be represented as an ally with FLE wherever they present their groundbreaking idea. The FLE initiative has selected the Bell Policy Institute to complete the feasibility study as the basis for a successful political roll out.
