Prayer Poles? Ribbon-Sticks? What’s That All About?

You may have noticed (or even participated in the creation of) Montview’s new set of 12 “Prayer Poles.”

First seen on Easter Sunday, the tall white poles – each with white and yellow ribbons attached – are intended to make our church more visually inviting, to underscore the tone of celebration in our worship, to remind us of the Holy Spirit’s presence, and to provide worshippers with a new way to participate in a form of “enacted” prayer. Somewhat akin to Tibetan prayer flags, the fluttering ribbons on the poles were attached by the many Easter worshippers who participated -who each placed one ribbon on one pole. (Thank you for your participation!)

The project was initiated by the Pastoral Staff, with materials paid-for by Children’s Ministry funds. Design and fabrication was by Montview volunteer Eric Muller-Girard. The poles’ hundreds ribbons, each attached with “Velcro” tape can, and likely will, be changed to different colors in future liturgical seasons; a way to involve God’s children (of all ages) in experiencing, thinking about, and celebrating the rich, grace-filled themes of our various Christian Seasons.
