MetroCaring Pandemic Update
In a recent zoom meeting, we heard an explanation of what MetroCaring does, how it is being impacted by the current dual crisis and how one can contribute.
MetroCaring provides for food for a large community. It is currently providing for 3 times the level it had pre-pandemic. It is providing delivery to elderly and those with compromised health issues which is a new level of service. Not only does MetroCaring provide food but it also believes in nutrition education with courses such as gardening, preserving, and food selection. It is providing social distancing in several formats: drive-up pickup and food processing. Because some do not have internet connections or computer hardware, designated hot spots and computer equipment have been installed.
The current crisis has made issues like evictions, SNAP and paid sick/family leave critical. We need to be aware of the political reality of those issues and lobby for their support. MetroCaring food costs have increased to $7000/week. That’s over and above the normal costs of providing food. They are facing extra expenses and a drop in donations. It is expected that the economic ramifications of the crisis will linger, and many will be faced with costs of recovery and debt load. MetroCaring is disappointed that in their 45 years of existence they haven’t been able to have a dent in the root causes of hunger. It appears that wages have not kept up with the cost of living, so many have to work multiple jobs to provide for their families. It’s especially true in the metropolitan area.
MetroCaring has received monies to match contributions to its cause. It will double any contribution. It has several levels of giving and encourages Montview to support its mission. Prior to the pandemic about 20 Montview members were involved in the activities of MetroCaring.
