During this challenging era, we find ourselves waiting, waiting for an end to things
like quarantine, racism, political strife, environmental damage, and violence. The
centuries-old custom of observing Advent honors that time of waiting. We offer this booklet as a guide through that tradition.
This booklet’s readings for each day are from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Sunday to come. Our pastors might include one or more of the readings in Sunday worship. During the 2020-2021 church year, most of our Gospel readings will be from Mark, although during these Advent weeks we will be reading mostly from other gospels. Many of our Hebrew Bible readings are from Isaiah and the Psalms, and most of them are rooted in the years before, during and after the Babylonian Exile. You might find them especially pertinent during this moment in history, our own kind of exile.
For each Sunday, there are a few words about lighting candles in an Advent wreath.
The hymn texts are from the Glory to God Hymnal.
